National Sentiment on Gun Control Legislation

As seen in the graph below, the number of people favoring stricter gun control laws has increased from 2010-2023. Sadly, if history is any indicator, the recent school killing of a sixth grader in Perry, Iowa, is unlikely to spur legislative change. While students often rally behind stricter gun control laws after school shootings (Parkland, Perry), and discussion around gun control legislation increases immediately after an event, the saliency of these efforts often drop off just months after the event. Multiple studies have found that favorability for stricter control legislation initially rises then falls. Similarly, support for stricter gun legislation after the Parkland school shooting dropped by twenty percentage points a year after the shooting. Overall, while media and news may have high coverage of school shootings initially, these events do not appear to impact opinions surrounding gun control in the long-run.
